I was blessed to grow up in really interesting times and to go back to a home where I was very safe.

My parents were wonderful people, but there were terrible rows between them, and at times I found the atmosphere at home unbearable. The Arthur Ransome books gave me an alternative childhood and the tools to escape.

I had phenomenal parents. They kept me very grounded, and I lived a normal life.

My parents split up, and a lot of things going on in the outside world made me want to immerse myself in an alternative world.

I was something of a problem kid. I was emotional, wild, rebellious at school. I'm very touched by kids who don't have advantages; they are much more interesting than kids who have everything. They have a lot of passion and emotion, such a strong will.

My childhood had its challenges, like everyone's. It imbued me with certain things and took away others. It made me very determined.
