When you're a performer, of course you want an audience, but it's very, very different from courting fame.

The audience, they're not professionals. They just love music. It isn't necessary to play over their heads to be admired.

If something is successful with the audience, it's automatically suspect; the reverse is to say that not to reach audiences is the greatest compliment an artist can receive!

You have to be willing to deal with the ups and downs of the music, the ups and downs of the audience.
