There's always a sense that people will do things quite differently if they think they have privacy.

Historically, privacy was almost implicit, because it was hard to find and gather information. But in the digital world, whether it's digital cameras or satellites or just what you click on, we need to have more explicit rules - not just for governments but for private companies.

I suspect privacy is a very new concept to humanity.

I am of mixed minds about the issue of privacy. On one hand, I understand that information is power, and power is, well, power, so keeping your private information to yourself is essential - especially if you are a controversial figure, a celebrity, or a dissident.

I particularly recognize that reasonable people can disagree as to what that proper balance or blend is between privacy and security and safety.

Privacy is not something that I'm merely entitled to, it's an absolute prerequisite.

When you were growing up, your mom and dad told you to look both ways before crossing the street or not to get into a car with a stranger. It's the same with the Internet. We have a big responsibility and a huge role in bringing all the stakeholders to the table - users, parents, educators, law enforcement, government organisations.

Privacy is a right, but as in any democratic society, it is not an absolute right.

Ironically, one of the clearer threats to consumer privacy is the government's largely unchecked ability to collect your sensitive information without due process.

I think we're seeing privacy diminish, not by laws... but by young people who don't seem to value their privacy.
