Information and inspiration are everywhere... history, art, architecture, everything an illustrator needs. Europe is, after all, the land that has generated most of the enduring myths and legends of Western culture.

The construction of Europe is an art. It is the art of the possible.

What we have to do is reinvent the idea of Europe.

In Europe art has to a large degree taken the place of religion. In America it seems rather to be science.

Europe is so much the home of Horror, with its myths of vampires, werewolves, witchcraft and the undead, yet it's like those myths were exported to Hollywood, leaving Europe the room to develop a new tradition as a way of processing its traumas, particularly the two world wars.

Europe itself is an embodiment of this diversity.

Europe has what we do not have yet, a sense of the mysterious and inexorable limits of life, a sense, in a word, of tragedy. And we have what they sorely need: a sense of life's possibilities.

Even before Europe was united in an economic level or was conceived at the level of economic interests and trade, it was culture that united all the countries of Europe. The arts, literature, music are the connecting link of Europe.

In Europe life is histrionic and dramatized, and in America, except when it is trying to be European, it is direct and sincere.

It's hard to explain why I like Europe so much.
