I think the solo playing, the decision to start playing solo, came out of having discovered what lay behind the doors that that technique opened for me.

Sometimes when I do an overdub solo, they'll keep four or five of my attempts and then mix the bits that they like to make a solo up out of them. It's not against the rules, really - I can learn my own solos, then. But that's the whole beauty of multi-track recording, isn't it?

When I play a solo I'm just expressing that moment. It can go horribly wrong easily enough.

That is the true joy of being a solo artist. I can do whatever I want. I can go wherever I want. I can show up with my guitar and my song, and it can sound a hundred different ways. That's the freedom of being on your own. The flipside is: That's you on the cover. If it sucks, it's your fault.

Generally my songs are just some riffs slung together as an excuse for a guitar solo.
