I believe the Times is a great newspaper, but a profoundly fallible one.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
I like to say that a 'Times' editorial presents a strong opinion based on reality.
But I think it's undeniable that the Times is a liberal paper.
I've written for 'The Times' because they have valued what I do enough to pay me. The 'New Statesman' magazine also asked me to write an article, but they didn't want to pay me anything. To me, that shows how much they value quality journalism.
'The New York Times' is a great newspaper: it is also No Fun.
I think that a great newspaper is one that puts a real premium on digging to get the story behind the story.
I know that doesn't sound very radical and webby of me to say that but I think the New York Times is important. I also think there's an occasional piece that will pop out.
The Times has much less power than you think. I believe we attribute power to the media generally that it simply doesn't have. It's very convenient to blame the media, the same way we blame television for everything that's going wrong in society.
My worry about the New York Times is that it's got the only position as a national elitist general-interest paper. So the network news picks up its cues from the Times. And local papers do too. It has a huge influence. And we'd love to challenge it.
People sort of take it for granted, but the more you see of the media world the more you appreciate a paper like the Times where its family continues to invest in editorial quality and I think it's the truly is the best paper in the world.
A good newspaper is never nearly good enough but a lousy newspaper is a joy forever.
