I'm not opposed to free trade if it's fair trade. But I am opposed to bad trade deals.

But I believe in fair trade, and I will tell you, I have many, many friends heading up corporations, and people that do just business in China, they say it's virtually impossible. It's very, very hard to come into China. And yet, we welcome them with open arms.

China's idea of fair trade is government subsidies of its textile and apparel exports to the United States, currency manipulation, and forgiveness of loans by its government banks.

Unfortunately, the United States has entered into several free trade agreements that do not sufficiently protect and support our manufacturing industries and the millions of American workers they employ.

I'm quite an advocate of free trade.

I don't expect the U.S. and China to get into a trade war simply because I think there are good people on both sides who realize that that's not in either economy's interest.

Let's start getting some free trade agreements started as soon as we can. We need to get on with it; we need to get a grip and make progress.

I am convinced that China needs to be a strong trading partner with the United States long term.
