In Chicago, I walked in knowing what the dancers were going to need.

After that, I started going downtown and doing a lot of theater shows in Chicago. When you go downtown there, it's like you're in New York, it's like going to Broadway.

After my tour I had time to stay at home, be with my boyfriend and hang out with friends and that brought me down to earth and helped me write music from a more relaxed place.

I sat in at every club in New York City, jamming with musicians, because it felt right - and because it felt right and we were having fun - the people dancing and sipping their drinks in the clubs felt it too and it made them smile.

Hip-hop was my first audience - I would rap in the mirror, walk down the street and listen to my Walkman.

This was a time frame when dance music and clubs were having a real impact on culture, and it had an impact on me.

Most people went to dance shows, but it was basically a table and a DJ playing and not really a spectacular thing. I brought the whole production with the effects - the best sound, the best lighting to blow the fans away.

But what was my motivation was music, and the fact that I love to move around. I'm always moving around.

As a halfway decent college DJ, I had been exposed to some great progressive stuff and always took pride in unearthing musical gems.
