When I design buildings, I think of the overall composition, much as the parts of a body would fit together. On top of that, I think about how people will approach the building and experience that space.

How do you design it so that people can form a space of their own, and feel quiet and contemplative?

All a work of art can do is present the surface. I can't know the insides of people. I know very little about the inside of myself.

Architecture is the thoughtful making of space.

I think space, architectural space, is my thing. It's not about facade, elevation, making image, making money. My passion is creating space.

There are certain parts of the home that I think embellishment feels cozy and inviting. Then there are other environments, for example, the living room, where I don't have a ton of items on the table.

I'm actually a sci-fi nerd on the inside; I just happen to be symmetrically put together on the outside.

My bedroom is my sanctuary. It's like a refuge, and it's where I do a fair amount of designing - at least conceptually, if not literally.

As an architect, you have to provide a shelter to enjoy art. And you have to love art. It's like when you make a concert hall. You must love music. This is the reason why you make the space, to enjoy music - making a space for art is the same thing.

The space within becomes the reality of the building.
