I grew up with an older brother who was always stronger and faster and better than me at everything, but I was close enough in age to try and compete, so we had a competitive childhood.

My elder brother and sister were both sporty and academic, and I think, subconsciously, I knew I couldn't go down that avenue.

I had this inferiority complex as a child, as I was not good at speaking. I was also not good in studies or sports and would often flunk in four-five subjects.

My brother and I had a real love-hate relationship with my success. There was some bitterness there that I didn't understand until recently, but I told him that if I ever did a record I wanted him to play on it.

Sibling rivalry was, and still is to this day, rampant in my family. We were all competing for my parents' divided attention.

My siblings were a bit younger than me, and I was always entertaining them and making up stories.

For me, stories were brothers, sisters and friends, filling the long hours between childhood and adolescence, holding up a true mirror in which I might find out who I was rather than a distorted reflection of who I was expected to become.

I had a great interest in sports. I had three older brothers who were great athletes. I was not.

My family has reduced the effect of my career on my self-esteem. When I'm with them, they make me feel special regardless of how I play.

The one thing that's closest to my story is the thing about trying out for the juvenile delinquent role and getting it. That was the start of my acting career... which I've resumed, by the way.
