My character in 'Casa de mi Padre' is an ambitious woman. I had never played that kind of character before.

While novels are fiction, mine are usually very close to my heart. Like my other books, 'The Lemon Orchard' is inspired by something I care about. I care so deeply. The stories are my dreams, and I want to do a lot of research. Roberto is based on a real live friend of mine named Armando who worked in my garden.

I love the idea of real-life experiences finding their way into fiction. I think that's really cool.

And I sense it was a rather constructed, almost half narrative fiction film in some ways. A lot of it was staged and manipulated to get those things in there that I knew to be strong.

I think you can always find interesting, complex and fascinating characters to play in different kinds of movies. It's in your hands.

It's always a mixture of fiction and your own story. It's more I recreate atmospheres and moods through songs.

Your structure and format may not be perfect, and you may not have picked the perfect franchise, but if I pick up a script, and the characters are real, whole, complicated and come from a place of somebody who really is feeling it, that's what people remember.

There is no doubt that this film is autobiographical, but at the same time it also tries to portray an ordinary couple in a language that everyone can understand.

I grew up Spanish, so I grew up watching a lot of novellas.

Basically you come up with the fictional idea and you start writing that story, but then in order to write it and to make it seem real, you sometimes put your own memories in. Even if it's a character that's very different from you.
