My contract with my teachers is fair, and is two pages. The union contract is 200 pages. You cannot manage your business when you cannot make any decision without going back to 200 pages worth of stuff.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
If you have poor management that's not doing the right job, you end up with unions filling the void and... page after page of work rules and thicker and thicker contracts.
I set the goal of getting a book contract by age thirty.
Maybe I'm old-school, but I always thought you honor a contract.
In the middle of my fourth year teaching is when I got my book contract - in 2010. I knew the book would come out in May 2011.
I got a couple of different contacts from publishing companies saying they'd be interested in a book about my work: not a kiss-and-tell book, which I specifically put in the contract. Just a book about my work and what I did.
What any writer hopes for is that the reader will stick with you to the end of the contract and that there is a level of submission on the reader's part.
In a memoir, I think, the contract implies a certain degree of truth. I think you have to be as true to your memory and your experience as you possibly can.
If I've written five pages by hand, out of those five pages, one page might be worth saving. The rest is crap. I have to throw it away. It's like I need eight hours to do two hours' work.
If you sit down with me, I guarantee I will accept any terms you offer for a contract.
A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.
