Depending on the story that you're telling, you can be relatable to everybody or nobody. I try and tell everybody's story.

When a story is told really well and is real, even if it's not about their own lives, people can apply it to themselves.

I think there's a natural link between the fact that our self is a story that we make up and that we're drawn to stories. It resonates, in a way.

I think when people begin to tell their stories, everything changes, because not only are you legitimised in the telling of your story and are you found, literally, like you matter, you exist in the telling of your story, but when you hear your story be told, you suddenly exist in community and with others.

All I can guess is that when I write, I forget that it's not real. I'm living the story, and I think people can read that sincerity about the characters. They are real to me while I'm writing them, and I think that makes them real to the readers as well.

When you're just starting out, and someone you think is a real storyteller says something good about you, that helps.

All stories should have some honesty and truth in them, otherwise you're just playing about.

The real problem is arranging that experience in a way that tells a story, which is just incredible enough to be interesting, but credible enough to be believed.
