Metaphysics is a science.

My views as an individual ought not to be confused with my views as a scientist - the minute you try to mingle God and science, you get into trouble. Metaphysics has its place, and science has its place; don't mix the two.

At a time when science plays such a powerful role in the life of society, when the destiny of the whole of mankind may hinge on the results of scientific research, it is incumbent on all scientists to be fully conscious of that role, and conduct themselves accordingly.

Science is a wonderful discipline, to which we are deeply indebted.

Whatever basic science resolves, at some stage it is of use to society. The problem is we do not know when or where.

At the end of the day, if there are truly ethical considerations, those have to override scientific considerations.

Science is objective. And in my view we cannot take any experimental results seriously except in the light of good explanations of them.

Science shouldn't be just for scientists, and there are encouraging signs that it is becoming more pervasive in culture and the media.

We're always, by the way, in fundamental physics, always trying to investigate those things in which we don't understand the conclusions. After we've checked them enough, we're okay.

Science is very vibrant. There are always new observations to be found. And it's all in the interest in challenging the authority that came before you. That's consistent with the punk rock ethos that suggests that you should not take what people say at face value.
