My readers know my views on politics and politicians because I make no secret of them in my comments for 'The New Yorker' and elsewhere.

The good news, though, is that I find in my political travels that people, as regular citizens, are more interested than ever in getting together and having discussions. They want to hear about other viewpoints that differ entirely from what the administration is putting out.

To go from politics to news, at least the subject matter is the same, even if the view is different.

In so many of the other beats these days, there are these layers of public relations people that you have to go through to get to the newsmakers themselves.

Most people get their politics, obviously, from TV shows about senators or movies about them or... all the day-to-day press and the talk shows.

I think I brush the surface of being involved politically with the issues and the personalities in the news.
