A Democrat has to show the toughness to govern. People don't doubt that Republicans will be tough.

States are like people. They do not question the awful status quo until some dramatic event overturns the conventional and lax way of thinking.

I was a hard-times governor. I had to steer my state through the deepest recession since the 1930s. But hey, tough times don't last and tough people do. And can I tell you that Virginians are tough people? We are tough people.

A nation can't get strong on political pablum.
