The queue and the fan are, of course, closely related in that fans will queue any length of time in any weather to see, touch, watch, hear, read, wear, or simply enjoy proximity to the object of their devotion.

Once, the world was full of mysteries, some of them frightening, some of them wonderful, some of them merely fascinating. Now, it can be a banal and predictable place, the tracks of daily life so well-beaten and defined, our culture awash with the imbecile obvious, our existence suffocating in safety. But mysteries remain.

I always find myself very distrustful of intense crowd phenomena, and I think those are things that we should always try to question, especially critically.

There is nothing better than a really cool mystery: you don't know what's going to happen, so you keep turning those pages or watching that series.

For whatever reason, I am just very attracted to mystery stories, solving mysteries. I was a huge fan of 'The Jinx.' That's such a satisfying show because it's all... I don't want to give it away to anybody, but it's really amazing.

I want the reader to know what's going on. So there's never a mystery in my books.

I've never worried about 'the reader' because there isn't one. There are thousands, and they all have strong opinions, from 'Magician' was the best ever,' and I've gone downhill since to 'The new book is the best ever,' so to whom to I listen? So I write for myself and hope other people like it.

If there is an audience out there for me, I want them to be surprised when the next book comes out.

I love to read, and I like the fact that there's some silence in my life.
