There's a rising tide of concern among activists, economists, and artists about Africa. Theres a temptation to think of it as a monolith as opposed to all these different countries with different problems.

Africa has been troubled for a long time - well, the world has been troubled ever since I was born.

The biggest problem in South Africa is that we have a disrupted timeline. Historically, politically, spiritually, economically, in people's minds, in people's heads.

It is my firm belief that action on the issues that matter for Africa must emerge from within Africa itself.

It's obvious that the rest of the world loves high African culture - African culture, period.

There is a greater fatigue concerning the African problem today than five or 10 years ago. The situation now in Africa is worse today than it was 10 years ago.

Africa was perceived - it still is to some extent - as a place which is very difficult to do business in. I don't share that view.

You see, Africa makes a fool of our idea of justice. It makes a farce of our idea of equality. It mocks our pieties. It doubts our concern. It questions our commitment. Because there is no way we can look at what's happening in Africa, and if we're honest, conclude that it would ever be allowed to happen anywhere else.

Africa is a very dangerous place.
