Lyrics are important, but it's hard, because English isn't my first language - although it feels like it is these days! I grew up with amazing melodies, so getting that right on a song has always been the key thing for me, but there's no reason why a great melody doesn't deserve great lyrics.

Lyrics can be important, but ultimately, what pulls people in on a song is melody and the tracks and the way music feels.

I think you can have the greatest lyrics in the world and if it doesn't have the best tune in the world it will suck. I mean if the music wasn't important it would just be a poem.

What makes a great song - you don't put it into words. You feel it. The perfect lyric. The perfect melody. It makes you feel something.

I love songs because by nature they are concise; they sum up. I try to use as few words as possible. It's usually funnier that way, anyway.

Every song has a bouquet, which is the music. If you can put words with something that is really apt, then you've done it.

But I always loved songs with great lyrics.

Songs are not better just because they're emotionally honest. To write a song well, you have to put some work into it and grind it out.
