I started dancing when I was three, Scottish dancing.

Edinburgh is my adopted home. It's a place where I wanted to come and live, and I managed to arrange my life so it happened.

Scotland is one of my favourite places to perform: it's really something special. Scottish audiences are just so enthusiastic; their approach to dance music just feels similar to my own somehow.

I had a whole Scottish existence until we moved to London when I was four.

When I was 18, I couldn't wait to move away. I was like: 'If I ever have to come back here, I'll kill myself.' Glasgow seemed like failure and death to me back then, but not any more.

Right from the very beginning, I knew I wanted to write palpably Scottish fiction.

My feet always danced to Irish traditional music, but I was very glad to get out of the North of Ireland in the mid-Seventies when it was really closed and tight and relentlessly unforgiving.

It's part of me, Scotland. I'm still immersed in it even though I am not there.

Although I'm not from London originally: I moved down here when I was 16, so it's played a part in my life. It's where I've lived for all that time.

Of course I've had my moments of wanting to go back to Scotland, and I almost did a couple of times, but other things just came up.
