From 19 to 28 there was a lot of turmoil in my life, but in a stuck way. Then, around 28, my life started to get shaken up. I realized I wanted to grow more and that anything that wasn't working in my life, I could fix it. I feel like I came into my womanhood. And that was when I got married.

I grew up in an era where you had to find your own way as a woman. When I was a kid, there was this whole physical and emotional neatness and purity that a woman was supposed to have, and I didn't fit into that.

I wanted to be the kind of woman who would attract a certain kind of man that I could respect. That was my thinking. It had to do with the kind of couple I would be a part of.

In their 20s, women try to be somebody they're not and try to turn themselves into something different. Now I'm in my 30s; I'm very happy with who I am.

When I was thirty and perhaps forty, I did not want a wife. It was too much fun being single.

I didn't want to get married. What I knew of most men was something I didn't want any part of. I just wanted to work on my career.

In my marriages, I'd lost parts of who I was because I was trying to mold myself into what I thought a man wanted me to be.

Men weren't always happy for me. It was very challenging to watch a woman be so successful.

It took me ages to grow into being a woman, into being happy with it.

I wanted to be an independent woman, a woman who could pay for her bills, a woman who could run her own life - and I became that woman.
