For decades Republicans have made policy with a higher purpose in mind: to solidify the GOP base or to damage the institutions and movements aligned with the other side.

I know something about how to build constituencies in an independent way.

Politicians are trying to attract people to issues.

Much of what candidates have to do is raise money and appeal to constituencies or interest groups that can provide that money.

Elections are about the future. And the GOP will not win a campaign focused on the past.

People want change but not too much change. Finding that balance is tricky for every politician.

For me it's more important to look at each constituency individually and find a community I feel I can serve to the best of my abilities, and where I feel I can make a real difference, and further their cause.

If we don't like what the Republicans do, we need to get in there and change it.
