If you're telling a story it's always best not to play the ending.

It's a tough job to tell a story when the audience already knows the ending, and the ending is bleak.

I'm probably an actor that tends to, instead of putting things on, think about it more in terms of taking away what's not in the character, until I'm left with what is. If that makes sense. That's probably a particularly American way of working, but maybe not. The end of any movie is a readjustment.

With any character you portray, you can never play the end in the beginning. You have to pursue and attack your intention as if they're going to be successful.

As an actor, you don't want to know the beginning and end to your character's arc. It makes it more fun. You're not playing the end. You're playing it realistically. You don't know where this character is going to go and what's going to happen to him, which just makes it more interesting for the viewers to watch.

Sometimes the kids come up with better endings than the real story.

A director shouldn't get in the way of the movie, the story should.

No actor ever forgets a role, so I should have realized something was wrong.

The idea of us telling a story where a character doesn't get everything he wants at the end is one of the relatable things - dealing with failures and missteps in life - and it's something that's so rarely dealt with in movies, especially kids' movies.
