Making a big Hollywood film that really affects people is as hard as making a small movie on a credit card.

I feel like a lot of funders of documentaries today want to fund films that have a social message that is going to yield results.

A lot of times you get credit for stuff in your movies you didn't intend to be there.

I never card out a movie. You know how people will outline or card? I don't do that. I tend to start with an idea and go.

I started off writing kind of big summer, blockbustery kinds of movies, but at that time, I had no name, nobody knew who I was, and somebody told me I can't write movies that are going to cost $100 million to make and expect someone to buy them; it was just impractical.

I've been blessed with enough wealth that I can make a film myself up to a certain budget. So one way I thought I would reinvent myself was just to make these very small, personal films that I've financed myself.

Quite honestly, it's too tough to get your movies made and then also to get out there and sell them.

And usually the studios they don't want you to have credit for your movies because they want to take credit for the movies because if you get credit for your movies they've got to pay you more.

But I feel that I have a responsibility to help the film and I have relations with the studio and with those who put up the money so that I can tell a story that I believe in.

I feel that if you want to make films, you have to be willing to make it without a fee. You get a deferment, I guess.
