It's not just about a coach telling you what to do and just following it unthinkingly.

I always do the contrary of what my coaches tell me.

You can live by biblical principles, and you can teach by those principles and still be a winner. So many coaches think you've got to kick your players in the rear end. You've got to cuss them out. You've got to hit them across the head. No. You don't have to do that.

I coach a few guys and they work very, very hard, but in our day we did it because we just loved it.

It's hard, or you wouldn't like it. A lot of coaches really don't like what they're doing.

Some coaches prefer players who will just do whatever he tells them to. It's like, if you're at school with a load of 10-year-old boys and you tell them to jump, everyone will start to jump. But the intelligent boy will ask, 'Why should I jump? Why?' That can be difficult for a lot of coaches, and I understand that.

That's the beauty of coaching. You get to touch lives, you get to make a difference. You get to do things for people who will never pay you back and they say you never have had a perfect day until you've done something for someone who will never pay you back.

I'm just going to do everything my coaches ask me.

The thing about it is almost everyone could pass that way, but we were kept from doing it by our coaches.

In 16, 17 years as a pro I was used to the head coach doing it alone. He might have asked his people for advice, but he made the decisions on his own. In order to learn quickly I couldn't do that.
