I agree totally with Metheny regarding the sound influencing the way you play.
I have to play as much of the game as I allow myself to get the music heard. But it's not unlike the rest of the world, so I'm not as up in arms about it as I could be.
When you're playing, you're playing something for the world to hear.
If I don't practice the way I should, then I won't play the way that I know I can.
It's just so much more fun to play bad than good. Plus it's just good to get that out of your system so it doesn't show up in your personal life.
I don't think so, in so far as I always aspired to play the way I do now but just couldn't get the sounds out always due to technical limitations - now I can pretty much play what I hear in realtime.
If you already have a piece of music ingrained in your body, why would you not play it?
When you sit down and play your music for someone you respect, you get that feeling in your stomach of like: 'Oh my God...' You know if it's not great because you start to feel sick.
I guess, like, the whole thing with music is - you're a little bit in control but not fully in control. Which is kind of the fun of it.
I'm better for it and I prefer to keep things simple and see what sounds I can get out of my head and hands rather than relying on a sound that someone else created.
