Well, I think any actor can probably identify with being a professional liar. You don't always look at yourself that way, but I know a lot of days I do.

I've said before that the common perception that all good actors should be good liars is exactly the opposite; only bad actors lie when they act.

People assume actors are born liars, but I'd argue the actor's job is to tell the truth. And I've realised I'm not a good liar.

It's a challenge, writing about actors, especially a good actor, because you can't always tell when they're being honest and when they're pretending - that is, when they're acting. The really good ones don't always seem to know themselves.

In all of us, there is a struggle between the good and the bad. It makes it more palpable and real to play such people as an actor.

I would like to think that I'm always honest with myself and others. I guess that's what makes me a half-decent actor.

The theater itself is a lie. Its deaths are mere special effects. Its tales never happened. Even the histories are distorted for dramatic effect. The theater is unnatural, a place of imagination. But the theater tells the audience something true: that the world requires judgments.
