One of the most important parts of my life has been community.

What is important is family, friends, giving back to your community and finding meaning in life.

As our cities have developed, they've built sometimes small villages or communities that were in place. And we've taken for granted all of that child care, the neighbourliness, the help that you get from people nearby.

Just as important as our society as a whole are our small communities: our neighborhoods, workplaces and schools.

I think it's an important thing, if you grew up in a neighbourhood that's different from the rest of the world, to remember what was different about your place and keep that in your heart, because that's what made you.

One city can look at other cities relative to their city and learn something. It's a matter of sharing the patterns of what exists in one society based on landscape or cultural values versus other cities.

I like the fact that Austin's the first place I've ever lived where there's a real sense of community. People care about their neighbors.

A community is a group of people who have come together, and they work and they live to try and improve the standard of living and quality of life - and I don't mean money.

The idea of community and helping others has always been a part of who I am. Growing up, my parents always made sure that my siblings and I were doing our part to serve our local community.
