When all my kids were at home, I used to write from midnight onwards.

I usually don't write at night, but there are times where I wake up at 3 in the morning and write all night.

Whatever our bedtime was as kids, we could stay up an extra half hour if we were reading. My parents didn't care as long as I was under the spell of a Stephen King or a Douglas Adams. Now I read in bed. I read at work. I read standing in line. It's like, 'Hello, my name is Nathan and I am a reader.'

I tend to write in the mornings.

But usually I'll wake up and start writing about nine o'clock. I'll probably write for about three hours, and I'll do that over the next month and a half.

At night I can write for hours.

What I remember when I started to write was how I couldn't wait to get up in the morning to get to my characters.

As far as I'm concerned, the entire reason for becoming a writer is not having to get up in the morning.

I am a morning writer; I am writing at eight-thirty in longhand and I keep at it until twelve-thirty, when I go for a swim. Then I come back, have lunch, and read in the afternoon until I take my walk for the next day's writing.
