I've always moved between media. Some ideas just work better in some media than others.

I'm very fortunate to have spent so much time in the industry and to have lived through several generations of filmmakers, actors and technicians. There's a huge volume of experience seeing people change and seeing content change.

I think that more diversity is a good thing, and fresh points of view articulated by people who are committed to excellence in journalism is a beneficial change in the American media landscape.

I think that what appeals to me in my work is having the opportunity to inhabit different genres and so to reach different audiences.

People become writers in the first place by those things that hurt you into art, as Yeats said it. Then they become separated from what started out affecting them. Journalism forces you to look at the world so you don't get cut off.

There are always new things to experience, internalize then write about. This process is ongoing with me. It never stops. The opportunity to reach new audiences with all of the music that we have made is thrilling.

Today there are millions of people making stuff and putting it into the world: that's become part of our identity and it shouldn't be limited to people who fancy themselves writers, or who are particularly witty or talented.

For me, what's a more important question is how we get at least the option of more diverse experiences in this media.

Genre-spanning is the effort to make the live show interesting. It's also a great way to challenge yourself as a writer.

All writing and publishing is very difficult, regardless of genre. There are going to be obstacles no matter what.
