I love research so much that I do an enormous amount; it helps put off the moment of starting to write the story.

I think that something photographers find about me is that I work really hard to make sure I know what they want before I start shooting.

I think sometimes I'm more fond of doing the research for the character because you learn so much. Sometimes shooting is really difficult because you wake up early and you're always hurrying. And sometimes I don't know what I'm doing. I'm here and there.

I spend a great deal of time on research, on finding all the available accounts of a scene or incident, finding out all the background details and the biographies of the people involved there, and I try to run up all the accounts side by side to see where the contradictions are, and to look where things have gone missing.

In the time between when you first read a script and are offered the role and the time when you begin to shoot, I really love putting in the time and work on that and getting a solid backstory to a character and researching all that I can about what that person does for a vocation or their upbringing or where they're from.

Even for an area I know well, I prepare a shooting list of subjects I need.

My research process doesn't vary much. I do a little reading to establish a timeline and decide how I'm going to approach the story.

I write nonfiction in this thriller-esque style. I have all the facts; I research it. I have thousands of pages of court documents... I try to get inside my stories.

I am a story-teller, and I look to academic research... for ways of augmenting story-telling.
