I came from a very, very small valley in the middle of South Wales. I grew up there with my father, who's a coal miner, and my mother worked in a normal factory.

Part of my childhood was spent in Sydney and part in rural New South Wales, at Armidale.

My mum's family are from Blaenau Ffestiniog, the slate town. My grandfather was Elis Humphreys Roberts, so that's quite Welsh isn't it?

On my mother's side, I come from Midlands engineers and, on my father's, from tenant farmers near Oxford.

When I was little, I grew up in a place called Hertfordshire, which is just near London, but out in the country, and I visited Pakistan in the summers to go and see my family on my dad's side.

I grew up in a little village in the west of Ireland.

It's strange; when I was younger and people would ask, 'Where are you from?', I'd say, 'West Africa', which was odd because I'm obviously not African, but it was my home.

I was born in a territory called Biran, in the eastern region of Cuba. It's known by that name, although it has never appeared on a map.

I started singing because I come from Wales.
