We were a Seuss family. As a child, I read almost all of his books, but the one I loved best was 'The Lorax.'

Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them.

People don't like the true and simple; they like fairy tales and humbug.

I'm not a big fan of kids' movies that have this knowing snarkiness to them or this post-modern take on storytelling. I think that sails right over the heads of most kids. There's something to be said for a well-told fairy tale. There's a reason that these mythic stories stay with us.

Some writers are so enthralled by ideas (one thinks of Doris Lessing) that their characters become debaters, and their fables approach allegory.

I always felt and still feel that fairy tales have an emotional truth that is so deep that there are few things that really rival them.

The fairytale has turned into a nightmare.
