Eating without conversation is only stoking.

Almost every time we get together with family or friends, the conversation ends up being about food.

We need a better way to talk about eating animals, a way that doesn't ignore or even just shruggingly accept things like habits, cravings, family and history but rather incorporates them into the conversation. The more they are allowed in, the more able we will be to follow our best instincts.

I'm not a flag waver for obesity. It's not healthy, and you have a crap life because there is such a downer on it.

Very rarely does food enhance the conversation. If the food is really good, there'll be much less conversation because you'd be concentrating too much on the food.

You don't ask people about the immigration policies of the U.K. or their country's agricultural policy. Instead, you talk to them about the meal they're eating or their family, and from that you get the sense of another human being, someone we can all relate to.

To address our current food system problems, I propose a series of local, regional, national and global conversations - starting around the dinner table - to rethink the food we produce, buy and eat.

I find that people in the food world are amazingly willing to talk about what they are doing, even when those things are quasi-legal or taboo.
