I wanted to create a heroine that was flawed. I wanted her to be a real person. She's selfish, she's childish, she's immature and because I'm doing a three-book arc I really played that up in the first book. I wanted the reader to be annoyed with her at times.

I start with a character and a situation, but I don't know what's going to happen until I write it. Sometimes things happen that surprise me.

I want to play a villain. I want to play a romantic heroine.

As far as writing or directing a film, I've worked with enough people who have done that that I know it's just a whole other level of responsibility and chaos and murder that I could not see happening. For now, I'm just going to see what comes. I know what I like and what direction I have.

I have no regret about making 'Heroine'; rather, I am happy I made it. I never shun my films; I stick to it.

You have to go out of your way as a suspense novelist to find situations where the protagonists are somewhat helpless and in real danger.

There are so many projects that you go into hoping the story works, and here comes a new third act and that kind of thing.

I enjoy heroines who grow and come into their own during the course of a story.

Write the story you need to tell and want to read. It's impossible to know what others want, so don't waste time trying to guess.

In those early days, the important thing was the happy ending. I did not tolerate unhappy endings - for my heroines, anyway. And later on, I began to read things like 'Wuthering Heights,' and very, very unhappy endings would take place, so I changed my ideas completely and went in for the tragic, which I enjoyed.
