I've written songs before, and I don't want to share them with anybody. It's really personal for me, that sort of creative outlet where you put your emotions to paper or put to song. I don't do it that much anymore, but to let someone in on that outlet and to have it susceptible to judgment is scary.

It is such a gift to be able to write songs in general, but when you can share it with somebody, it is just such a pleasure. It is such a happy moment when you finish a song, and you are just like, 'Wow - that was great.'

But I always held my music up and protected it from compromise. So I just do it for my friends. I've written hundreds of songs, and I'm sure I have a few albums worth of songs.

It might crush a lot of people, but I've never been in the room with an artist that I've written a song for.

If you're going to write a song, try to get together with a collaborator because it's better to write with collaborators.

I am a songwriter. I do get to put my personal experiences in song.

You know, there's still a lot of great songwriters out there who hand in songs. And there's a lot of brilliant singers and performers out there who sing other people's words. I enjoy doing both.

I'm competitive with anyone who writes a good song - I don't care if it's a band or solo artist or whoever.
