Performing is my passion. Being onstage is at once exhilarating, beguiling, and fulfilling. But it's hard.

For me personally, my favourite part of performing is just going in the crowd and doing crazy things that they never expected to see. Challenging myself to do new things that I never expected to do. That's the biggest thing for me.

Once I started performing I knew that's what I wanted to do with my life. But you have to work really hard to be a performer.

You perform for a different audience each night. People who don't understand just think that you go out there every night and do the same thing, but you don't - you have to find out who they are and give it to them.

Performance-wise, you really need to be down in the trenches; you need to do the hard work, for a lot of reasons: To build yourself as a performer, to get a sense of the audience, to work hard and to wonder, 'Do I really want to do this?'

I love being a performer. It's like a hole that never closes. It's something in you that never dies.

The stuff I do and say onstage I can do easily. As a performer, that comes easily. But being social offstage, it's not easy for me.

If you're performing music that is not who you are or where you're at, it is painful. It's painful for the performer and for the audience.
