I was a different person before I started to write. When I realized I could be a songwriter and that people would listen - that was when I started feeling good in my life.

It's a gift that I have and I became good at it. When I heard my first song I didn't even know that I could write songs.

I was a very romantic, overly dramatic young lady, which served me well as a songwriter. Especially as someone who had to focus on lyrics and melody, because if you're a dramatic and romantic person, lyrics come easy, and you turn every single short-term relationship into the biggest 'Romeo-and-Juliet' story ever.

I wrote lyrics that were intensely personal to me a few years ago. Maybe people know me better now.

It must have been when I was 14 or 15 that I started tentatively writing songs and was able to convey an emotion and a lyric with what I wanted to say.

I listened to pretty much anything that I could really feel, where I felt like the artist had to write those songs, where you can feel their soul and the pain and the happiness and love and everything.

That's really what was wonderful for me growing up, since I got to know so many of the songwriters who liked me and thought I had talent. They would then tell me how to read a lyric and sing a song, and challenge me to try and find a different end to a song.

A lot of the music I write is about love. Sometimes I won't understand how I am feeling until I write a song about it.

When I was very little my mother would read to me in bed. She gave me a fascination for stories, and for the music in words.

I started writing songs by myself. That always came from whatever I was feeling and being honest about that because I never had any intention of anyone ever hearing them.
