Life learned early on to recognize itself.

I had a lovely time growing up.

My parents had a gardener when I was growing up, and he and I would dig in the dirt together - my mom and dad were definitely not digging with me! When I was 5, he helped me plant some corn in our backyard, and I remember how fascinating it was to watch it grow. Little did I know that 50 years later I'd be growing corn in a different way.

I basically was a precocious little kid.

From my earliest days, I was fascinated by science.

My most amazing discovery was becoming a mother. It changed everything. I can't imagine my life without these little beings.

In my early days, I was eager to learn and to do things, and therefore I learned quickly.

From the time I was a small boy, I remember working in the fields with my grandfather and father. We weren't growing grapes, but we were farming crops, creating something good out of the earth.

I realized very early the power of food to evoke memory, to bring people together, to transport you to other places, and I wanted to be a part of that.

I went through puberty late. I was a little, little, tiny kid. I was still growing in college.
