I write about heartbreak because I like writing about sad things, but I'm writing happy songs, too!

I think I drift toward sad love songs.

The saddest songs are written when a person is happy.

My songs have always been frustrating themes, relationships that I've had. And now that I'm in love, I expect it to be really happy, or at least there won't be half as much anger as there was.

In the course of my life, I've made some happy songs but it's the more sort of like pathos-laden, emotional, melancholic music that either I make or that other people make that really resonates with me.

I'm such a strong believer in making yourself happy. Almost in a selfish way. There are a lot of trends, and obviously you can get swept up into them. But I feel like if you just write songs you love, it can have trap beats in it or whatever's going on in the moment, but you don't stop loving songs.

When we're falling in love or out of it, that's when we most need a song that says how we feel. Yeah, I write a lot of songs about boys. And I'm very happy to do that.

I love sad songs. They say so much. I love country music but even the happy songs sound really sad.

The strongest feelings I've had in my life are when love has gone right and when love has gone bad. And I think strong feelings make good songs.
