I never got away from the war. Not because I was obsessed with it in those years, but because it was the event of my generation and I started out covering it so I stayed with it.

I wanted to continue doing my work, but I had to figure out how. And so what I have basically come up with is that I still go to Afghanistan and Iraq and South Sudan and many of these places that are rife with war, but I don't go directly to the front line.

I was very much in favor of the Iraq invasion.

War was my university. Everything has proceeded from there.

I went to Vietnam; it was my first assignment as a reporter for the UPI, and I never could get away from the war.
