My books have all generated controversy.

What I look for in any book is an argument, based on evidence, that changes the way I think about something important.

For me it's more important that I outline all the facets of a controversial issue and let the reader make up his or her mind. I don't care if readers change their minds, but I would like readers to ask themselves why their opinion is what it is.

As a reader, I much prefer to read a book where people embody all kinds of ideas and everybody is making mistakes.

Sometimes when I find myself very irritated about a topic, I know it's my next book.

People have different views of how you deal with different issues in literature, and, frankly, long may it last that there is a range of views.

I'm comfortable having a specific audience to write to. I like the idea that my audience doesn't see what I do as controversial.

I love it when my books cause controversy, when people argue violently about the ending.

I never discuss a novel while I'm writing it, for fear that talking about it will diminish my desire to write it.
