The ability to make music is a gift that you're born with; it's not something you can learn.

I basically taught myself how to sing and play by copying records, and that's just how it was for me. I know that's true for a lot of budding musicians out there - that's the thing that gets them inspired, is trying to learn their favorite songs. I think it's a great way to teach yourself.

Music is such an incredible tool for kids in general. They learn discipline; they learn how to express themselves. You learn math. You learn language. It's the ideal teaching tool, and that's why it's mind-boggling when any school superintendent decides that music is something we can kind of do without.

You cannot teach a person how to write songs. It's about being your own person and following your instincts.

When we first started playing in the early days, none of us really had any idea about writing our own songs yet. We were struggling how to learn our instruments and play songs to be able to perform for people.

That's exactly why I came into music in the first place: to be inspired by what I hear to make it something else, to make it my own. That's how culture, creativity, moves, isn't it?

I never took a music lesson in my life, it just came naturally.

If you are making music for other people, you will have to be aware of how people relate to it.

I would like to teach music. It's weird the way they teach music in schools like Julliard these days.
