I always devise a background so that it makes what your character goes through logical and keeps up the continuity.

Before I write the first page of a novel, I spend a long time creating detailed backgrounds for my characters. I imagine the experiences that have formed them, what makes them happy, angry, fearful, and what they yearn for.

The thing that I've decided is, I don't want to be invisible, but I'd like to be transparent. I want people to see what I'm thinking and see through me.

You know what I would like to do: make a film with actors standing in empty space so that the spectator would have to imagine the background of the characters.

To create characters, one must build background. And one of the tools we use is improvisation.

I put a lot of time and energy and thought behind what I do and the characters that I create, and I don't want to do anything peripheral that is going to make an audience see me up there on the screen rather than who I'm playing.

For writers and artists, it's always a balancing act between wanting to be the center of attention and wanting to be invisible and watch what's going on.

The way that you present yourself visually totally dictates your audience and everything that anyone thinks about you.
