Africa is the future.

Now, of course, we know there has been an end to apartheid in South Africa, but what excited me was seeing it in the context of history.

Johannesburg is weird, because half of it is like Los Angeles. It feels like just wealthy parts of L.A. But half of it is severe slummy, something like Rio De Janiero or something. So it's kind of weird, because it's both happening at the same time.

Now that we have a democracy and you can go back and the airport air is not laden with evil any more, you can actually breathe oxygen when you land in Johannesburg.

I'm extremely optimistic about rapid transformation and change of things in Africa in general.

I envision someday a great, peaceful South Africa in which the world will take pride, a nation in which each of many different groups will be making its own creative contribution.

I'm not pessimistic about Africa. The cities just seem big and hopeless. But there's still a great green heart where there's possibility. There's hope in the wilderness.

South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white.

I feel no bond with South Africa, which is curious, since South Africa is where I was born.
