When people recommend to me a book for personal reasons, that's what makes it fun to read. It's like when people would make mixtapes and say, 'Here are the songs I think you should know.'

At the end of the day, I'm just trying to write a song that I like, that I'm not afraid to turn loose on the world. I do read a lot. I know a lot of people who read more, but I do try to keep a book in my hand most of the time, and I think that informs any kind of output that I'm going to have.

I always create book soundtracks to capture the overall mood I'm going for and listen to them as I write. Those songs and scores really fuse with the scenes in my mind.

Sometimes a book influences me because it winds me up. There'll be something that gets under my skin and makes me think that I can do better.

With my gift, I can pretty much write a song out of anything.

A lot of music you might listen to is pretty vapid, it doesn't always deal with our deeper issues. These are the things I'm interested in now, particularly at my age.

I'm obsessed with books. When a good book hits me, it's all I can think about and all I can do.

But the thing that will always occupy me the most is music.

Music can get me through anything.
