The thing with being on a series that runs that long is that the writers run out of things to do.

I never thought in a million years that I would do a weekly series.

With movies, it's 10 or 12 or sometimes even 24 weeks, if it's a massive movie, to live within a character. But with a show that's successful, if you start in the first or second season and go until the end, you're always finding new elements of your character that are being added in because you start to live in them as human beings.

I grew up watching 'Magnum, P.I.' and shows like that, where you could develop a character over eight seasons, with stories along the way.

That's the holy grail as a TV writer, to work on a story that you care about and to put it out there and for it to find the audience and connect with fans and connect with critics.

When you're making a television show, it's about the story and arc of the show rather than any particular episode or director.

I've always had a show that went seven episodes or 13 episodes or whatever. And I've never had a show that's gone past a first season. It really is a lot of work.

The best part of being on a television series for all those years is that you really get to hone your craft.

But you talk to most filmmakers and it is six, seven, eight years trying to get things off the ground. It is incredible really.
