As Americans after 9/11, we're much more united, together as a nation, and we got stronger, better, and more at peace. By peace, I mean the harmony you can feel in our united determination to fight these terrorists and killers.

Am I not peaceful? We want to be free - completely free. Free to be free. We want to be left alone.

The American people want peace. They have long since ceased to talk of a hard or a soft peace for Germany.

But the deep desire for peace remained with the American people.

I said it was my feeling that the American people would struggle for peace, and that has since been underscored by the President of these United States.

What makes war interesting for Americans is that we don't fight war on our soil, we don't have direct experience of it, so there's an openness about the meanings we give to it.

There is nothing more American than peaceful protest.

I don't think I'm yet peaceful because I have to struggle every day within myself when I see the suffering of the people of the world, the women and the children. And fury sets in. But I have to transform that and take it out and do something positive with it - but I have to do that sometimes minute to minute.

I was born in 1960 into a more violent America than we had in 2014. We haven't been in such a good place for more than 50 years.
