As a culture I see us as presently deprived of subtleties. The music is loud, the anger is elevated, sex seems lacking in sweetness and privacy.

It's tragic that you can define a whole movement in music by gender alone. People are like, 'Oh, look, another quirky girl.'

Its funny, because for females in general - not just in music, but the corporate ladder as well - anything we do has always been harder for us. When it comes to music, the industry wants you to conform, to look like this and to sound like this and do this or that. It makes it harder. It's harder for us to come out and be bosses and lead the pack.

Now, in music, it seems more like the popular crowd suppresses anyone who is different.

I think musicians and actors have all these problems, because of the popularity and the opportunity.

For me, actresses are constantly chameleons, and so they are taking a backseat to their own personality. I don't feel like we're trying to show off their personality as much as let them be a blank slate. It's precisely the reason why I dress more musicians than I do actresses.

A lot of people seem to get preoccupied with what I'm wearing as opposed to the music.

The world is a complicated place, and there's a lot of division between people. The performing arts tend to unify people in a way nothing else does.
