I write about people who are usually damaged or neglected by society finding each other and forming relationships that are quite extraordinary and in some cases life-saving. I've had a few of those relationships, which I value highly.

I'm more interested in interpersonal relationships - between lovers families, siblings. That's why I write about how we treat each other.

With relationships, I've been through a lot of different situations with different people, and I write about it.

I do make some conscious efforts to write female friendships, intergenerational female friendships. I make a conscious effort to include things that I see as important real parts of my life that are not reflected as much as I think they should be in popular culture. We very seldom have the opportunity to see women compete and remain friends.

You need to experience life to be able to write about friendships, relationships, and heartbreak.

I like to write about women, not so much about the way they relate to men, but about the way they relate to each other. And I don't think anyone's really doing it.

I write about families. That is who we are.

Maybe if I ever come to write about my teens and adulthood - and I can't imagine I will - but if I do, then maybe I will want to say a bit more about the ways in which my parents' relationship with one another impacted on me in later years.

I tend to write about more than one generation because as a child I had contact with more than one generation; it was normal to be around older people.

I have written about the women around me. My ancestors, my relatives, lovers. It was a way of trying to make it all make sense.
